Mostly pictures of fungus

Warning: I don't know anything about fungus

This is going to be a picture-heavy post, just so you know. And it may get cut off if you’re reading this in your email, so if that happens you’ll just click on “view entire message” down at the bottom.

I don’t really know much about mushrooms and fungus (is there a difference?) and they’re bewilderingly difficult to identify (at least it seems that way to me).

We had a lot of rain from tropical storm Ophelia, so a few days later I went out to a local park to take a walk. (I don’t know about you, but I think visiting the woods after rain is something special)

Anyway, I thought maybe there would be a lot of mushrooms after all that rain, and I wasn’t disappointed. So here I present to you, with no identification whatsoever, a bunch of pictures of interesting things.

This photo doesn’t even really capture the vibrancy of this orange-gold color.

These were tiny, and a very weird color.

These were pretty big, and had a strange smell.

Lichen? Moss? Probably not fungus, but still pretty neat-o if you ask me.

I think this one had been chewed on.

I don’t know why I didn’t get a better picture of the tops of these. They were green on top.

These looked like tiny stalactites and were a very interesting translucent-looking pearly color.

PINK?!

There were trails of these purple little things growing all along the sides of this one tree.

Y’all, this was all at one park, and I only walked one of the short trails - maybe a mile and a half total. The variety of colors and textures and shapes is so amazing. Why are they all so different? Why are the colors so variable, with some eye-popping and vibrant, and some muted and delicate? Are there differences in how they spread? Their sizes are so different, too, with some as big as my head, and some as tiny as a thumbnail. Amazing.
